Degrees of Comparison are used to compare people, places, animals, or things. In ICSE English Language Paper 1, students are often asked to transform sentences from one degree to another without changing the meaning.

The three degrees are:

Degree Example
Positive Degree Rahul is as tall as Aman.
Comparative Degree Rahul is taller than Aman.
Superlative Degree Rahul is the tallest boy in the class.

1. Positive Degree

Shows equality between two persons or things.

Structure:

as + adjective + as

Examples:

  • Riya is as intelligent as Neha.
  • This road is not as wide as that road.

2. Comparative Degree

Compares two persons or things.

Structure:

adjective + er + than

OR

more + adjective + than

Examples:

  • Riya is more intelligent than Neha.
  • This road is wider than that road.

3. Superlative Degree

Compares more than two persons or things.

Structure:

the + adjective-est

OR

the most + adjective

Examples:

  • Riya is the most intelligent girl in the class.
  • Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world.

Structure:

No other + noun + is/as + adjective + as

Example:

  • Positive: No other city in India is as crowded as Mumbai.
  • Comparative: Mumbai is more crowded than any other city in India.

Structure:

Comparative + than any other

Example:

  • Comparative: Iron is more useful than any other metal.
  • Positive: No other metal is as useful as iron.

Structure:

Comparative + than any other

Example:

  • Comparative: Rahul is taller than any other boy in the class.
  • Superlative: Rahul is the tallest boy in the class.

Structure:

the + superlative

Example:

  • Superlative: Shakespeare was the greatest dramatist.
  • Comparative: Shakespeare was greater than any other dramatist.

Structure:

the + superlative

Example:

  • Superlative: Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
  • Positive: No other mountain in the world is as high as Everest.

βœ… Use “any other” for singular nouns

  • Delhi is bigger than any other city in India.

βœ… Use “all other” when comparing with plural subjects

  • India is stronger than all other teams.

βœ… Remove “the” while converting into Comparative

  • The tallest → taller than any other

βœ… Meaning must remain unchanged
